META: There are various kinds of tents available in the market and every camper has a different requirement. It is therefore imperative that you look for a tent that best serves your needs and at the same time is durable and suitable for the weather type of your camping site.

Camping can be fun, exciting and one big adventure but make sure you are cosy, comfortable and sheltered; otherwise it can be a nightmare. Every individual has a particular need that varies from person to person and it is up to you to decide which kind of tent will suit your needs best. You can choose a tent depending on the space that you will require, the weight you can carry and the weather conditions of the area you are planning to visit. High standards in terms of material, durability, quality and reliability can be provided by tent manufacturers as they test them.

Materials used for tents are generally lightweight nylon or polyester fabric. However the groundsheet or the base of the tent uses a far more durable fabric because of the constant abrasions that it suffers from the ground below. Ripstop nylon is used to prevent it from tearing easily. All camping tents are made to be waterproof by using a coating of polyurethane. Drizzle or a sudden shower will mean that water can seep in from the outside. This however, will prevent this from happening. The forming of condensation can be prevented on the tent with certain coatings. Make sure you check this out before you purchase otherwise you could end up with a tent that has no ventilation.

The kinds of tents include ridge tents, geodesic tents, dome tents and tunnel tents. There are many factors which can determine whether your tent can withstand severe weather conditions; these include, the arrangement of the poles for the tent, the location of the guy points and the aerodynamics. Geodesic tents are the most sturdy and made to the standards that are fit for harsh weather conditions and therefore these types of tents are more suitable for expeditions. This has been designed uniquely in the sense that, the poles interconnect to each other to form a strong structure which means there is more room inside the tent. The added bonus is it can also take the weight of snow and reduce wind penetration.

Tunnel tents as compared to dome tents provide more space because its curved roof gives more height area than the sloped pointed roof of a dome tent. This means you will not feel constricted as there will be more room inside the tent. If you are considering buying a lightweight tent, then a dome tent would be more suitable as it uses only two poles for support or sometimes three if a porch is included. This would be very appropriate if you were going backpacking.

If you are looking for a family tent then you must look for designs that are structured keeping in mind a base camp environment. These will remain standing until the end of the trip as such tents are only erected once. Because these are larger and heavier, it is safe to assume they can accommodate more people for a longer period of time. Taking a tent that is a size bigger than your actual retirement can also be useful as this will mean you have more space; and no one will regret that. With all the information discussed in the article you can now purchase the right tent for your needs with peace of mind.

Camping, A Means To Reconnect With Nature

As a recreational activity, camping has a unique place. It is not just about taking pleasure from the activity during leisure periods. It is also much more than about physical and mental well-being. It is about connecting to the need of establishing a symbiotic relationship with nature. Human progress has taken a heavy toll of nature. The land, water and air have been subject to heavy pollution. The rivers, forests and valleys have been ravaged in the name of human progress. There is a growing consensus that an ecologically sustainable development alone will allow species survival, both human and non-human.

There are a number of essential things that require to be taken along for camping such as camping tent, sleeping bag, jacket, flashlight, first aid kit, matches, knife, food and water. If the camp site has no basic facilities, they you may need camping chair, camp table, hammock, fishing pole, camp stove or grill, towels, small backpack for day hikes  and swimsuits. A sweatshirt with a hood, cap, jacket, sleeping bag line and gloves would be useful in case the weather is cold. If it is hot, then a sunscreen, extra water, large hat to fend off the sun rays, a small battery powered fan and canopy for shade will be useful.

Camping tent is probably the most important in terms of creating a temporary living abode. Camping tents are varied according to the climate. The one-season tent is used in summer. It can endure light summer rains. The three-season tent can endure heavy rains as well as light snow. This tent is used in spring, summer and autumn and can also offer ventilation, and protection from insects, moderate rain and wind. However, it will not be able to withstand heavy snow. The four season tent is heavier and can withstand winter and heavy snow but is difficult if the climate is hot. There are four season tents that can be converted to three season tents by unzipping a roof panel or removing pole sections. Bibler Ahwahnee tent for instance is a four-season tent.

Camping has the tremendous potential as an activity to reconnect the campers with nature. The experience is expected to make people think and be sensitive towards our relationship with nature.

It Is Just As Your Bed, The Sleeping Bag

Sleeping in the open is very enticing. All one need is a cozy bed, blankets, bed sheets and a pillow. But while going camping, lugging all of them is a nightmare. But this is easily solved with a sleeping bag. Sleeping bag resembles a zipped up bed. It provides insulation, comfort and the warmth. The main attraction is that this is something that anyone can take along while traveling. It prevents the chill from creeping in. It protects from the wind. It protects the user from the outside. It is easily transportable along with your backpack. Sleeping bags are made of insulating materials such as synthetic fill such as PrimaLoft, or down, cotton or wool. Campers usually prefer the synthetic or down sleeping bag. The insulation is good and water absorption is minimal. It can be folded. The down fill bag can be compressed and retain heat better, but synthetic bags are cheaper.

Sleeping bags are of two shapes, namely the rectangular shaped ones and the mummy shaped ones. The rectangular shaped sleeping bag looks like a zipped up folded blanket. This are easily foldable and are tied tight using the straps or the cords. The mummy bags are shaped to look typically like a mummy with the head end broader slowly tapering as it goes to the leg end and closing fully. It retains the heat better than the rectangular shaped bags but it is cannot be folded but instead rolled yup and tied tight with cords or straps.

There are a number of reputed firms that produces and sells sleeping bags. Marmot, a firm that sells sleeping bags, also manufactures Marmot tents, backpacks and clothing. It manufactures both Synthetic Bags and Down Sleeping Bags as well. The synthetic sleeping bags of Marmot includes Marmot EcoPro 30 sleeping bag, Marmot Pounder sleeping bag, Marmot EcoPro 40 sleeping bag, Marmot Trestles 15 sleeping bag and Marmot Trestles 30 sleeping bag. The down sleeping Bags consists of Marmot CWM sleeping bag, Marmot Helium EQ sleeping bag, Marmot Never Winter sleeping bag, Marmot Col EQ sleeping bag, Marmot Synthetic Yurt sleeping bag, Marmot Down Yurt sleeping bag, Marmot Atom sleeping bag,  Marmot Lithium sleeping bag an Marmot Arroyo sleeping bag, besides others.

It is necessary to consider a variety of factors to decide what sleeping bag suits your need. The major factor is of course the budget. Most sleeping bags are suitable in both hot and cold weather. All one has to do is to unzip when it is warmer and zip it up fully when is colder. But this will not suit in extreme cold conditions. There are sleeping bags specifically to handle extreme cold. When it is wet, the synthetic bags are better endowed than the down bag. But the down bag is better in dry weather.

Wakeboarding for Beginners

I spent the last week learning how to Wakeboard on a small lake in Northern California while checking out some lakefront cabin rentals. Ok, I really didn't want to disclose the lake because it's one of those still small untouched places that not many people know about. I'll give you a clue, it's located in Northern California near a small grassy area. Send me a email if you know where I'm talking about. It was different for me because I’m usually used to Smokey Mountain Cabin Rentals because I live in the Tennessee area so this was a real treat.

Ok, back to learning how to wakeboard. I've been waterskiing a good part of my life but it sure didn't help me figure out how to wakeboard. I thought that because I knew how to water ski that learning how to wakeboard would be easy but I found out that it's not similiar at all. Here are some of the differences I found.

First, the wakeboard is not running with the direction of the ski boat. I found this very odd and really hard to get used to. The wakeboard lays perpendicular to the ski boat and when you say hit it the wakeboard acts as a plow pushing the water over the board and into your face. It took sometime to learn that you must put your weight on the back of the board first and then turn the board around as you lift out on top of the water.

At last, I got up and it felt really good after swallowing 5 gallons of lake water. I was tired but ready to enjoy this new wakeboarding sport. However, I was not ready for the new experience of standing sideways to the board it I never did get used to having my feet facing across the board. How do you get this board straight, was the hardest thing for me. The wakeboard kept on angling to the left and wanting to turn. Finally, I let the board turn on by itself and I went over the boat's wake only to find my head hitting the water. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted and I found some good cheap cabin rentals to boot.

New Mexico Attractions

Explore New Mexico Vacation at the Ballooning Capital of the World When you are looking to make your plans for your New Mexico travel vacation getaway be sure to consider a visit to Albuquerque to see the International Balloon Museum! You will need to be present the first seven days of October when the Balloon Fiesta is going on. For 9 straight days there are balloons flying filling the sky of Albuquerque in a brilliant display of the more than seven hundred balloons that enter the event.

Including over 300 resident balloonists living in the Albuquerque region you will be able to see balloons throughout your stop. In fact, you can probably book a excursion to go up on one from one of the many operators in the region and see the wonder of the area from the sky.

If you arrive for the Balloon Fiesta make sure to stay around in the evening so you can see Balloon “Glowdeos”. This is where the balloonists’ fire up their propane burners to inflate the balloons against the evening sky which leaves the whole sky aglow with psychedelic light bulbs! There are also different styles of some of the balloons that you will appreciate seeing. There are dinosaurs, bumble bees, flowers, a stage coach and cow jumping over the moon. They all rise up in a mass ascension of “special shape rodeos” for your viewing.

While you are in the city make sure to go to the International Balloon Museum one of the best New Mexico attractions. Everyone will haev an opportunity to find out about ballooning, the theory, culture, history, sport and art of the flights while you are visiting the Center. It’s easy to find since it is right on the edge of the field.

The price of admission is fair so you won’t have to select just one event, you will be able to attend many and always have enough cash to eat while at the park. There are food vendors throughout the city to take care of your hunger needs while you are there.

Since you are going to be there in October you are going to want a jacket for the mornings. It will be around 40 degrees during the morning flights and warm up to approximately seventy as the day progresses. Dress in layers to be able to shed some when you get to warm. Be sure to bring sunscreen with you because are at a high altitude and there is a chance for sunburn. Wear comfortable shoes, you will be walking and standing a lot so might as well be comfortable. You can bring lawn chairs into the field, unlike a number of events today. If you bring a large backpack with “treasures” be ready to have it inspected before you enter the park.

This is a family event so make sure you plan to attend. Remember that a New Mexico vacation can be more than looking at museums and canyons; you can also look to the sky!

Going Skiing : Safety Considerations

August 31, 2009 by admin

In this part of our learn to ski guide we look at what to be aware of whilst skiing.

Though skiing has a relatively low injury rate when compared to other recreational activities, thousands of skiers are still hurt every year. The nature of it means that you’ll always be at a degree of risk, but there are things that you can do to minimize the risk of sustaining an injury.

First, make sure that you have all the equipment you need, that it’s in good working order, and that you are appropriately outfitted to ski.  Your boots, bindings and skis should all be tailored to your weight, height, and level of expertise and should be checked over by a certified ski shop after every prolonged absence of use.  Keeping yourself warm, particularly your hands and feet, and making sure that your clothing is resistant to both wind and water is of particular importance.

If  you don’t know how to ski and don’t have confidence in your ability, then just don’t.  While family and friends may know what they’re talking about, it’s a better idea to learn from a certified ski instructor.  The better your skiing knowledge and technique, the less mistakes you’ll make, and the less mistakes you make, the less you’ll be putting yourself in harm’s way.  Research has proved that those who take more ski lessons are less at risk of injury than those who have taken fewer lessons.

Ski only at a speed which is safe (in relation to your ability and experience, the number of skiers around you, the condition of the slope and the weather conditions), don’t make any rash or unpredictable maneuvers, and never stop unnecessarily.  Just as with traffic, you must obey all the posted signs on the slopes, especially those posted at the top and bottom and where slopes merge, and if you end up on a slope that makes you question your safety, don’t attempt to ski it, rather side-step down it with your skis on.

Don’t try to ski yourself into shape, rather, prepare months before your planned ski trip with a good strengthening and conditioning program.  Focus on aerobic training but complement it with some weight training also.  Being conditioned and fit is a good way to avoid fatigue and allow you to ski for longer periods.  Skiing whilst tired is dangerous so know your own physical limits and take rest breaks at regular intervals.

Re-apply your sunscreen during your rest breaks, and make sure you rehydrate as well.  Regularly drinking water is important as failure to do so can result in nausea, fainting or altitude sickness, and sunscreen (factor 30+) is essential, even on cloudy days, because the sun’s rays are stronger at high altitudes and the snow reflects its rays.

Are you planning to go camping for the first time?

With current weather actually proving to be half-decent so far this summer the UK is seeing a huge rise in the people turning to camping as well as caravanning to keep the holiday costs at a bare minimum. According to Camping and Caravanning Club their advance bookings have already rocketed by a huge increase of 27% so far this year.
Taking a camping holiday is by no means simple and easy, the only thing you do not need is your passport. Many people are choosing to go camping this year instead of going to places like Spain and America as it seems to be cheaper. Is it really cheaper if you are going to have to purchase alll of the equipment it may actually be cheaper to go on a last minute holiday. When going camping for the first time the priority is safety.

For a first timer there are a few important factors you have to take into consideration.
Taking things like allergy tablets, sun cream, insect repellant are important but make sure you have a first aid kit as this can be very useful when there is no medical help for a few miles. Make sure that if you are in a caravan you are parked safely and of course if you are in a tent make sure it is pitched correctly and in a safe position. Keep away from rivers and tall trees as they can attract lightening. As well as this try to keep away from other campers as if a fire starts you do not end up taking someone else’s tent along with yours.

In just 60 seconds your tent could go up in flames so make sure you do not light any gas near it, as well as making sure you trip is planned inculding if something goes wrong.

To avoid the troubles of paying out for something stolen or lost take out gadget insurance so you can easily claim the gadget back if something bad does happen. If it is home you are sticking to this year then make sure you home insurance covers everything, it is important to note that pest infestations are usually not covered to it may be worth taking out home emergency insurance as well.

Piloting A Pontoon Boat Free From The Elements

August 31, 2009 by admin

If you own a Pontoon or have seriously considered purchasing one, it is most probably due to the unmatched blend of a low price point and relative flexibility for pleasure boating compared to greater, costlier freshwater craft.  There is no better boat that seems more appropriate for fishing, sightseeing, or simply kicking back with a chilled beverage while crossing a lake.  The experience, however, will not be pleasant for long, as you sizzle beneath the rays of the sun or get drenched by rain.  To seize the most satisfaction from your pontoon excursion, you should obtain a raised protective canopy, most commonly known as a Bimini top.

Bimini tops are named after the island of their origin, {whose fishermen are credited with its creation to protect them from the elements}.  The modern Bimini top may be found in a vast variety of shapes, sizes and colors, though there are certain important factors to help narrow down the style of Bimini top you would need.  The two indispensable factors that you must take into account when purchasing a Bimini top are:  (a) the dimensions of the top, (b) the type of fabric.

First, you must select a pontoon bimini top that fits your pontoon boat accurately.  This demands that you acquire several measurements of your boat.  For width, simply measure the distance across your boat from gunnel to gunnel, with slight extra space for the mounting frame.  The top can be any length you choose that you feel will provide you enough shade from the weather. Length is more arbitrary, but ideally you would want a top long enough to cover a certain average number of occupants at any given time, with additional fabric extended above if you want additional shade.  Lastly, to measure height, attach a straight object across the boat where the mounting brackets will be positioned, then measure upwards to the height that you prefer. If you don’t intend to do a lot of standing under the Bimini top, you can measure for a height where you can bend over to enter the boat without excessive effort..  A higher Bimini top may increase wind resistance, but then, are you really attempting to break any speed records in a pontoon boat?

Choosing the right Bimini top fabric concerns striking the ideal balance of cost versus longevity.  Cotton-based tops are the cheapest, made of textiles similar to canvas, and are a viable option if you’re on a budget and limit your pontoon boat excursions.  Cotton tops are not resistant to ultraviolet (UV) rays, susceptible to leaking, and may tear apart over time unless stored properly.  Vinyl tops are a very popular choice since they are hassle-free to clean, tough enough to provide protection from the rain, and are normally treated against UV radiation and deterioration from mildew.  Acrylic and treated polyester tops are the most expensive, but also extremely durable, remarkably resistant to scratching and fading, and strong enough for constant outdoor excursions. They look and feel like they can withstand the rigors of fishing in inclement weather.  Acrylic and polyester would be a wise choice for the serious pontoon boater.  Companies like Sunbrella provide exceptional original fabrics that provide the best protection for your money.

Choose wisely.  A good Bimini top often spells the difference between a refreshing time out in the water, and being tortured by inclement conditions before you are compelled to beat a hasty retreat to shore.

The Newport is a good option, with two choices for color combination {either Amaranth and Nile or Simply Taupe and Port Royale}. This sandal has toe fortification, and can be used for hiking on wet or dry surfaces. There is a strap that adjust for a comfy fit as well as a foot bed that conforms to the shape of your foot for even better comfort.

Finally, for those who want footwear that they can wear near the water, the Waterfront collection is a great place to look. The Bali sandal is a good option. It has quick drying mesh for the upper, and an odor reducing microbe shield in the foot bed. There are two options for colors, Moroccan Blue with Greenery or Heliotrope with Lupine. These are slip on sandals that will be much more comfortable than the inexpensive flip flops a lot of people choose to wear to the beach or the pool, and a lot more fashionable as well.
